It says a lot about the political culture in the UK that the only person who has faced any consequences for Dominic Cummings' actions is a journalist who pointed them out. https://www. theguardian.com/media/2020/may /27/bbc-switches-emily-maitlis-in-newsnight-episode-over-cummings-remarks   …
Criticism has been levelled at both Emily Maitlis’ 26 May intro and the BBC’s response ...

This is astonishing. Hot on heels of Newsnight comes this. The government is now literally using our money to *pay* the Daily Mail to publish pro-government propaganda pieces about how well it is handling COVID-19. ‘Sponsored by The UK Government’

A BBC insider has told us the decision to reprimand Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis yesterday was "weak and embarrassing." In a blistering attack, the well-placed BBC news source, who works on one ...

The @BBC should be proud of the award-winning journalism of @maitlis, her forensic analysis, commitment to speak truth to power and call politicians of all parties to account. Maitlis presents Newsnight, not the News. Her voice, her views, deserve more respect from her employers.
Emily Maitlis has been replaced as host of Wednesday night’s episode of Newsnight after BBC bosses reprimanded her over a monologue in which she attacked the government’s handling of Dominic Cummings’ ...

Been overwhelmed by all the kindness, messages - and support on here - and I’ve probably missed much of it. A big thank you from us all at #newsnight

So grateful to my friend and excellent colleague @katierazz for stepping in this evening . She did so because I asked for the night off -knowing tonight’s prog would be in the most excellent hands #newsnight https:// twitter.com/katierazz/stat us/1265742658657542144   …
What did Emily Maitlis say on Newsnight? Sat, 30 May 2020 02:00:00 GMT

In the 198Os when I worked on Newsnight the BBC held the line. If Emily Maitlis has been suspended for 1 night for her Dominic Cummings assessment - stand-in Katie Razzall denies it - its a dark moment. No minister is ever available. Now the BBC apologises for the truth. New lows

So the question is now whether she broke the rules and not whether he did? But of course. https://www. google.co.uk/amp/s/metro.co .uk/2020/05/27/emily-maitlis-wont-appear-newsnight-dominic-cummings-comments-12767242/amp/   …

BBC Newsnight’s policy editor is a Labour activist. How long do we have to put up with these corrupt campaigners hijacking the state broadcaster? https://www. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7 852721/Ministers-set-snub-BBCs-Newsnight-hires-Labour-activist.html   …

Emily Maitlis has finally been inducted into the Fake News Party after last night's impassioned monologue about nothing of any significance to ordinary Britons. Too bad she won't be wasting our time tonight following the BBC's decision to suspend her.
Darren Grimes 28/05/2020 08:39
BBC really is going in to bat on this. If this blatantly biased and self-indulgent form of monologue, that dresses opinion as fact, is to become the Beeb’s ‘new normal’, then the government should ensure it kisses goodbye to its regressive funding model. https://www. bbc.co.uk/news/entertain ment-arts-52830437   …

If Emily Maitlis is no longer presenting Newsnight tonight when she was due to and hasn't been stood down, as her editor is saying, then the only logical conclusion is she pulled out in protest at her treatment.

You smashed the Ofcom impartiality rules while castigating Domnic Cummings for breaking the rules ( which I’m not sure he did ) , to look after his 4 year old autistic child. As someone who had 5 false hit jobs done by Newsnight I know how you operate ! https:// twitter.com/maitlis/status /1265894540386242560   …

Does this mean the BBC has to un-apologise for Newsnight
Do BBC bosses really understand impartiality & public sector broadcasting? When those in power blatantly lie, impartiality means calling them out @maitlis made clear Govt Ministers had been invited to put their case but had declined #bringbackmaitlis https://www. bbc.co.uk/news/entertain ment-arts-52824508   …

For years I have argued that the BBC is a seething cauldron of toxic leftism. Now many more share this. It’s time to defund it. https://www. telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/05/2 7/newsnights-anti-cummings-rant-exposes-bbcs-true-partisan-colours/?WT.mc_id=tmgliveapp_iosshare_AvYBPpJr83MN   …

So @maitlis gets shoved for asking all the right questions and standing up for truth and integrity and Dominic Cummings stays in place for making up fairy tales about eye tests and day trips to castles 300 miles from home. You're been done up like a kipper Britain. #newsnight
There’s a possibility that the shithouse behaviour of Dominic Cummings might be the end of Johnson, the Tory government and the BBC. #Newsnight

If people really think the Newsnight intro was OK, then no problem. Simply say “we accept broadcasters have the right to editorialise in their news programs” and change the rules accordingly. But don’t pretend what happened wasn’t editorialisation, because it was.
