#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Harry G Theaker, for "Children's Stories from the Arabian Nights" (Rose Yeatman Woolf; undated. Circa 1920). Theaker was a prolific and appealing illustrator of affordable collections of fairy tales/children's stories. Here's "The Magic Horse".

#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by @catherinerayner for "The Go Away Bird" by Julia Donaldson (2019). I nabbed a signed copy in Edinburgh after falling in love with the birds in this book, from the filigree, feathery Flip Flap bird to the painterly & over powering Get You bird!

#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is very late, as, I'm travelling. And it's not really an illustration, but I love it anyway. Its a photo of John Burningham stringing up his model of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to photograph for his illustrations for Ian Fleming's 1964 classic! Pure magic!

#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by @pam_smy for her brand new book, "Merrylegs" (2019) about a pony with a dream... Look at this gorgeous illustration with wonderful heightened light & shadow, a careful palette & fabulous composition. Who could resist a retro fairground like that?

#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Brian Wildsmith for "Circus" (1970). A subject that would be harder to celebrate today, but what astonishing illustrations! They dazzle with colour, astonish with texture and delight with character. I love this huge bear, peddling a tiny cycle!

#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by John Burningham for "Courtney" (1994). I'll be joining Catherine Rayner to celebrate the great man's life & work TODAY at the Edinburgh Book Festival, 5.30. I love his deft characterisation - the gentle Courtney, in quirky yet sensitive line.

#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Margaret Bloy Graham for "Harry the Dirty Dog" by Gene Zion (1956). Deceptively simple, hugely expressive, charming, funny illustrations bring this tale to unforgettable life. The retro/vintage vibe has been much imitated but never matched.

I love detail in an #illustration. Lots going on besides the #story itself. It is so interactive for when you are sat with your child, glancing over the image for ages, picking out bits you never saw, the last time you got the book out. #ChildrensBooks #bookillustrationoftheday https:// twitter.com/mrjamesmayhew/ status/1161528765249445890   …

#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Harry Rountree for Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1908). Although prolific, illustrating many books, this once much-loved NZ illustrator died in poverty in Cornwall. I love how this scene is all about everything *except* Alice!

#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Raymond McGrath for "Mistress Masham's Repose" by T H White (1947). A real favourite book of mine, I love endpapers & I love a MAP so win/win. No other illustrations sadly. The story, about a girl & secret colony of Lilliputians, is fab.

#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Krystyna Turska for "The Prince and the Firebird - the story of the ballet" (1982). I've always liked Turska's curiously wrought, beautifully imagined illustrations, the very stuff of fairytales. An echo of Kay Nielsen in this composition perhaps?
